 APAX-5000 Series Question & Answer

A When you enable the EWF (Enhanced Writer Filter) function, there won’t be damage to power off APAX-557x at any time. Otherwise, we recommend to power off APAX-557x after you shut down the operating system by software.

A There is no problem to power off APAX-5520 at any time. Once the power is back, the system will boot up again.

A One RS-232 with DB9 interface and one RS-422/485 with screw terminal block interface.

A One RS-485 with clamp terminal block interface is available.

A Yes, you can do this using APAX coupler.

A The power will be transferred from APAX-557x to the stacked APAX-5000 I/O modules through the backplanes. So if the power is enough for the whole system, you don’t need to add extra power to the APAX-5000 I/O modules.

A The first way is to leverage the two connected internal COM ports of APAX-557x and APAX-5520. The two modules can communicate with each other by Modbus/RTU protocol. The second way is to use the external LAN port or RS-485 port of APAX-557x and APAX-5520 with extra wiring. The two modules can communicate with each other by Modbus/RTU or Modbus/TCP protocol.

A Yes. APAX offer one expansion port on the backplane. Connecting different backplanes together with standard Ethernet cable and insert APAX-5000 I/O modules and controller on these backplane makes

A It’s 100 m with standard industrial Ethernet cable. However, the expansion distance can be longer if standard unmanaged Ethernet switch is used.

A The managed Ethernet switch will influence the I/O local bus real-time performance.

A No, there is isolation protection between the I/O channels and the backplane. (2500 VDC)

A No, we don’t support channel-to-channel isolation yet.

A APAX series will pass international standard CE certification which involves ESD testing (according to IEC-61000-4-2, it meets the requirement of performance criterion A). It will perform contact discharge with 4 kV discharge voltage and air discharge with 8 kV discharge voltage.

A No problem. APAX I/O module itself supports hot swap function, so it can be added to or removed from the system without shutting the system. And KW software can support on-line programming download. So you can insert a new module to the system, and then download new program with the new hardware setting to the controller.

A APAX analog input module supports wire burnout function for specific input range. Refer to table below for more detail.

Module Which range supports wire burnout detection
APAX-5013 RTD (all type)
APAX-5017 Current (4~20 mA)
Current (4~20 mA) Current (4~20 mA) and Thermocouple (all type)

A No, there are special-designed electric circuits on the backplane which can prevent it.

A Up to 32 I/O modules can exist in one system. (Maximum 16 analog modules)

A Yes, there is built-in Modbus server on APAX-5570XPE/5571XPE. Any HMI/SCADA software supports Modbus/TCP client can access the APAX I/O modules directly without any extra programming.

A APAX controller currently supports backup function. Two controllers are equipped with the same control program. At first, the master controller will run the control program. The backup controller will take the control responsibility (run control program) when the master controller crashes. We are developing the redundancy ability and will release soon. The difference between backup and redundancy lies in two aspects:
  1. For backup: When the master controller dies, another controller will restart the control process.
For redundancy: When the master controller dies, another controller will continue the control process.
  2. For backup: The database won’t be exchanged between the two controllers.
For redundancy: The database will be exchanged between the two controllers.

A Yes, it supports.
